It’s been a crazy month of full-time rehearsals, learning to pole dance, and getting La Traviata onto the stage, but it has really paid off.
The show opened to the press on October 2nd, and so far there has been some truly amazing feedback, including: 4 stars from Broadway World, “Becca Marriott and Helena Jackson's stripped down (and strippered up) La Traviata, another King's Head show that melds opera's past and present in an irresistible mix;” 4 stars from Actdrop, “Small-scale it may be, but this version of La Traviata is nevertheless a wonderfully engaging evening of sumptuous singing, with Becca Marriott's immensely moving portrayal of Violetta the icing on the operatic cake;” 4 stars from thespyinthestalls, “This ‘Traviata’ may not have the uplifting contrast of the big choruses or the intrigue of the sub plots, but its contemporary slant and abundance of wonderful arias make it an enjoyable taster for those unfamiliar with opera;” 4 stars from CultureWhisper, “This is a fantastically direct and perceptive introduction to Verdi for anyone who fears that opera will be overstuffed, and a refreshing new look for Traviata's existing fans;” 5 stars from LondonPubTheatres, “With an expert new English libretto by Becca Marriott and Helena Jackson La Traviata is brought bang into the twenty first century;” and an excellent review from British Theatre Guide, “The moving force behind this production, Becca Marriott, is an unorthodox triple-threat. Along with director Helena Jackson, she has created the libretto for this modern take on Traviata. In addition, she is a gloriously powerful soprano who can effortlessly overcome some pretty ropy acoustics and, as these pieces demand when audience and performers share tiny spaces, acts like a pro, especially in this tragically moving role.”
The play text has also been published by Oberon Modern Plays, and can be purchased directly from the publisher, on Amazon, or at a reduced price of £5 as a show programme.
I will be singing the role of Violetta on the following dates: 5th, 6th, 9th, 11th, 13th (3.30), 15th, 17th, 19th, 20th, 23rd, 25th, 27th (3.30) October (all 7pm unless specified otherwise).
